If you want dreamy engagement photos… Timing matters
One of the BIGGEST things that affects how your engagement photos feel is lighting. It’s not your outfits or your location. It’s the lighting. So, I thought I would share when the best time of day would be for your engagement photos in Michigan.
Light changes everything.
It affects skin tones, colors, mood, movement, and the overall emotion of your gallery. The exact same location can feel completely different depending on the time of day your session takes place.
This is why I help all of my couples choose a session time intentionally instead of randomly picking whatever works best on the calendar.
Because, at the end of the day, if you want photos that feel natural, romantic, emotional, and true to you… Timing matters more than most people realize.
Golden Hour Is the Best Time for Engagement Photos
Golden hour is the hour before sunset, and honestly… It’s popular for a reason.
This is when light becomes:
- soft
- warm
- glowy
- flattering
- dimensional
- cinematic, even
Instead of harsh shadows and bright highlights, everything feels softer and more natural. Skin tones look beautiful, movement photographs better, and your images get that emotional, cinematic feel most couples are drawn to.
This is usually the light you see in the majority of my portfolio because it aligns so well with my documentary and storytelling approach.
Golden hour also helps sessions feel less stiff.
The softer light creates room for movement, connection, and those quiet in between moments without everything feeling overly posed or harsh.
Especially in Michigan, sunset light can be absolutely unreal during the summer and fall months.

Why Midday Light Is More Difficult In Michigan for Your Engagement Photos
Midday light usually happens when the sun is directly overhead.
This creates:
- strong shadows under the eyes
- bright highlights on skin
- squinting
- uneven lighting
- harsher contrast
This doesn’t mean photos can’t happen midday. It just means that sometimes timelines, weather, or schedules make it necessary.
But generally speaking, midday light tends to feel less romantic and less natural compared to sunrise or sunset sessions.
This is especially true at:
- beaches
- open fields
- dunes
- wide open parks
- lakefront locations
The brighter the environment, the harsher the light tends to feel in the middle of the day.
That said, there are still ways to work around it. Shaded areas, architecture, tree coverage, and intentional positioning can help soften midday light significantly.
Part of my job is knowing how to adapt depending on the environment we’re working in. P.S. If you’re still looking for the best spot to document your engagement photos, I share my favorites in this blog post.
Cloudy Days Are Actually Amazing
One of the biggest misconceptions is that cloudy weather ruins photos.
Honestly… Some of my favorite sessions have happened on overcast days.
Cloud cover acts like a giant natural diffuser, which creates:
- soft, even lighting
- muted tones
- less harsh contrast
- more documentary style imagery
- a moodier, intimate feel
And because of that, cloudy sessions often feel calm, cozy, emotional, and incredibly true to life.
If you’re a local already, you know this, but for the folks not familiar with Michigan, Michigan weather changes constantly (and I’m not being dramatic!), so I always remind couples not to panic if clouds show up in the forecast.
Some of the most emotional galleries happen during cloudy evenings near the lake or in wooded locations throughout West Michigan.

The Best Time of Day Depends on Your Location
Different locations photograph best at different times of day.
Beaches + Lake Michigan
Sunset is almost always best.
This is when the light reflects beautifully off the water and the sky starts pulling soft tones into the background. Michigan beach sunsets create some of the dreamiest engagement photos, especially along the lakeshore.
Downtown Sessions
Downtown locations are usually more flexible.
Buildings create natural shade, reflections, texture, and light pockets throughout the day. This gives us more room to work around harsher lighting conditions.
Downtown Grand Rapids sessions especially work well slightly before sunset when the city starts softening but still has energy and movement.
Wooded Locations
Wooded trails and forest areas offer the most flexibility because trees naturally diffuse light. Wooded locations can photograph beautifully earlier in the evening because the tree coverage softens direct sunlight naturally.
Open Fields + Dunes
Open spaces almost always photograph best during golden hour.
Without tree coverage or shade, the lighting becomes much harsher earlier in the day. Sunset helps soften everything and creates that airy, emotional look most couples want.
What You Wear Looks Different Depending on Lighting
Lighting affects more than just the mood of your images. It also changes how colors, fabrics, and textures are photographed.
Soft evening light photographs:
- neutrals beautifully
- earth tones naturally
- flowy fabrics softly
- textures with more depth
This is one of the reasons I usually recommend outfits that feel timeless and connected to the environment around you instead of super bright or distracting colors.
Your outfits should feel like they belong in the scene naturally.
I always tell my couples to think of their location like a painting that already exists… And now we’re choosing what to wear inside of it.

Michigan Seasons Change the Light Too
One thing that makes Michigan engagement sessions unique is how much sunset timing changes throughout the year.
Summer sessions usually start later in the evening because sunset happens much later (I’m talking like after 9pm!).
Fall sessions often start earlier and create some of the warmest, most emotional light of the entire year.
Winter sessions can actually be beautiful because the sun sets earlier and creates soft light much sooner in the day.

Want Your Session to Feel Natural?
At the end of the day, the goal is never to force perfect poses or overly curated moments. The goal is to create space for you to actually connect with each other while I document what naturally unfolds.
When lighting, location, and timing all work together, your session feels easier. You’re able to slow down, stay present, move naturally, and focus on each other instead of worrying about the camera.
That’s where the magic really happens.
